Meet the Owner - Gardner Stone

Born and raised in Middlebury, Vermont, Gardner Stone got his start selling his very first car—a 1962 Chevy Impala to Teresa Bicknell in 1964—and went on to build his reputation as the founder of the G. Stone Motors franchise and a lifelong racing and tractor-pulling aficionado who once headlined his own TV series. A self-confessed lover of big motors and old-school bartering, he grew restless in retirement and parlayed that energy into Gardner’s Trading Post in Rutland—where he’ll happily take just about anything in trade. Now a proud great-grandfather, Gardner’s boundless enthusiasm for horsepower, haggling, and uncovering hidden treasures keeps both family and customers coming back for more.

Welcome to Gardner’s Trading Post, a unique used car dealership that goes beyond buying and selling cars - it's a treasure trove of history, nostalgia, and the passion of its founder, Gardner Stone.

Gardner’s Trading Post, located on the northern end of Rutland on Route 7, is not your typical used car dealership. Established by the dynamic team of Gardner Stone, Pam Stone, Craig Oshood, Spencer Copeland, and Jeff, this business offers more than just vehicles; it's an experience in itself.

Stepping inside Gardner’s Trading Post feels like entering a time capsule. The walls are decorated with vintage items and collectibles, each with its own story to tell. The eclectic mix of memorabilia creates an atmosphere that sparks curiosity and invites exploration. It's not just a place to buy and sell; it's a haven for enthusiasts of all things unique and historic.

Gardner Stone, the former owner of G. Stone in Middlebury, Vermont, brings his wealth of experience and a touch of nostalgia to this venture. One notable feature is the showroom, where Gardner proudly displays his record-holding drag car - a Shelby Cobra Mustang. The roar of its engine may be absent, but its presence adds a thrilling touch to the overall ambiance.

What sets Gardner’s Trading Post apart from the usual used dealership is Gardner Stone's relentless spirit for adventure and action. During an attempt at retirement, Gardner started to find the hours too long and the days too easy.  He remembered his days of barter; helping people turn the things they had into the things they wanted.  His passion for the automotive world, his desire to share his collection of unique finds, and his inability to sit still led to the creation of this one-of-a-kind establishment.

Gardner’s Trading Post not only thrives on its diverse and hard-to-list inventory but also the personal touch and the genuine passion of its owner. Whether you are in need of a unique deal on a car, a collector of Americana, a small business owner, or a local explorer this hidden gem in Rutland is well worth the visit. Come to Gardner’s Trading Post at 2201 US Route 7 N Rutland, VT 05701 for a special Vermont experience and, as Gardner likes to say, “Find something you like more than your money”. Barter is back!
